conch-shell

The conch-shell is said to be the preserve of several gods and goddesses: Brahma on the seat (shankhapitha or shankhadhara), Surya in the middle and Chandra at the tip. On the right side are seated Aditya, varuna, Soma, Vayu and Agni. Shankha is presided over by the twin gods Sun and Moon, and Varuna is it’s deity; at the back of the conch-shell is Prajapati, and in front the river goddesses Ganga and Sarasvati.Well you already have a great reply from Shivam, I will just like to add that we have lot of negative and or evil energies around us or within individuals, the 'Shankh' is blown before the beginigning of pooja to neutralise these negative energies, usher freshness and new hope. It is only after the negative forces are neutarilsed the 'Gods'/Deities are called to preside over the pooja.

If 'Samundran Manthan' was division of positive and negative forces, the 'Sankh' is the first positive force that has come out of this manthan and hence can be termed as the 'Supreme Positive' and Lord Vishnu holds this 'Panchajanaya Sankh' the 'Supreme Positive' in one hand.

All of us also know that biologically, it is the shell of a sea creature living in the sea. We also know that it is constituted of calcium silicate and a container made of that is good for contents.

But coming to its theological associations, it commences with the koormaavataar! According to the Bhagavathapurana, the Holy Conch Panchajanyam came out during the great churning of the mythological Milk sea (Ksheeraabdhi) in search of nectar (Amruta) by both the devils and angels.

The inner meaning of the episode, as explained by elders, is when one churns his mind with thoughts, both the good and evil thoughts spring up and when one takes efforts continuously with his Aatma sakthi (representing the inner soul, a representative of Almighty in each) to filter the evils, gradually the good prevails over the evils like the nectar coming out.

That philosophy apart, coming back to the conch associated with us, the sound coming out of conch when air is blown through it resembles that of omkara (Pranava), which is nothing but the resultant of the vector addition of the forces generated by all sounds in the universe.

The conch is not easily spoilable. Its colour represents the purity of the good beings. The inner design of the conch is so very intricate like that of our inner organs, yet, it produces a sound that is powerful enough to jerk or rekindle us. Like wise, though our lives are complicated we are capable of producing virtues, not withstanding complications.

Seeing thus the metaphoric similarities, the vedic dharma should have given a prominent place in our way of life to the conch, so that a person, despite his shortcomings, is always reminded of his greatness (Aatmasakthi). To create and retain his awareness, the conch was given an important place

# Shankham #

A must for household in all gods worship. No hole is drilled in it because conch with hole is not fit for puja. The Conch Shell is a major Hindu article of prayer and an important part of Hindu symbolic and religious traditions. According to the Vedic scriptures, the Shankha (Shell) is one of the most auspicious objects that emerged from the sea during the Ksheera Sagara samudra manthan. Left and Right Hand conch shells are available in different size for various Puja requirements.Counch Shell is the symbol of Maa Laxmi. Crystal Counch Shell is used to energize an area or to energetically expand an area that is cramped and uncom. The conch bent on the right hand, is called Right handed conch. Keeping its head-part towards the worshipper, its open part remains towards the right.Shankham" comes from the two Sanskrit words "Shum" which means something good and the "Kham" meaning water. Hence the meaning of "Shankam" is "The conch holding the sacred water".As the story goes, the demon Shankhaasura defeated devas, the Vedas and went to the bottom of the ocean. The devas appealed to Lord Vishnu for help. He incarnated as Matsya Avataara - the "fish incarnation" and killed Shankhaasura. The Lord blew the conch-shaped bone of his ear and head. The Om sound emanated, from which emerged the Vedas. All knowledge enshrined in the Vedas is an elaboration of Om. The conch therefore is known as shankha after Shankaasua. The conch blown by the Lord is called Paanchajanya. He carries it at all times in one of His four hands."Shankham chandrakadaivatwam kukshouvaruna daivatam prusthe prajapatirdaiva mugre ganga saraswati Pruthivyam yani teerthani vasudevasyachagyaya Shankhe tisthanti viprendra tasmat shankham prapoojyayet"The conch-shell is said to be the preserve of several gods and goddesses:

Shankham

In Hinduism the Shankha is a sacred emblem of the Hindu preserver god Vishnu. The shankha is still used as a trumpet in Hindu ritual, and was used as a war trumpet in the past. The Shankha is praised in Hindu scriptures as a giver of fame, longevity and prosperity, the cleanser of sin and the abode of Lakshmi - the goddess of wealth and consort of Vishnu.

Shankha's significance is traced to the nomadic times of the animists who used the sound emanating from this unique shell to drive away evil demons of whom they were scared. The same is still believed in Hinduism. Over the centuries the shankha was adopted as one of the divine symbols of Hinduism.

The sound of the shankha symbolises the sacred Om sound. Vishnu holding the conch represents him as the god of sound. Brahma Vaivarta Purana declares that shankha is the residence of both Lakshmi and Vishnu, bathing by the waters led through a shankha is considered as like bathing with all holy waters at once. Sankha Sadma Purana declares bathing an image of Vishnu with cow is as virtuous as performing a million yajnas (fire sacrifices) or bathing Vishnu with Ganges river water frees one from the cycle of births. Padma Purana asserts the same effect of bathing Vishnu by Ganges water and milk and further adds doing so avoids evil, pouring water from a shankha on one's own head before a Vishnu image is equivalent to bathing in the pious Ganges river.

Shankha is one of the main attributes of Vishnu. Vishnu's images, either in sitting or standing posture, show him holding the shankha usually in his left upper hand, while Sudarshana Chakra (chakra - discus), Gada (mace) and Padma (lotus flower) decorate his upper right hand, the lower left and lower right hands, respectively.

Avatars of Vishnu like Matsya, Kurma, Varaha and Narasimha are also depicted holding the shankha, along with the other attributes of Vishnu. Krishna - avatar of Vishnu is described possessing a shankha called Panchajanya. Regional Vishnu forms like Jagannath and Vithoba may be also pictured holding the shankha. Besides Vishnu, other deities are also pictured holding the shankha.

According to the Vedic scriptures, the Shankha is one of the most auspicious objects that emerged from the sea during the Ksheera Sagara samudra manthan. Hence it is regarded as the brother of Goddess Lakshmi, the ruler of wealth. Most of the Gods and Goddesses hold the Shankha in their hands. Shankh is one auspicious nine objects – Navanidhi – of Kubera who is the Lord of wealth. Blowing the Shankha is regarded as an auspicious sound at the start or end of any ceremony.

Shankha pooja is a must in the Vedic

These are the five names with which the Shankha is worshipped in the Vedic pooja.

The Shanka verse recited in pooja.

Several deities recide in its different parts: in the front end the moon, in the hollow sides Varuna, at the back Prajapati and in the lip the rivers Ganga and Sarasvati. The shankha is one of the four
attributes that Vishnu holds in his hands. Hence the Shankha should be worshiped.

According to Tantric belief, the shankha keeps away evil spirits and saves one from calamities.

The water from the Shankha purifies the sinner and can cure all the ailments which cannot be cured by the other medicines. It is a cure for the physical ailments in humans, from the the fear of death and gives liberation from the eternal cycle of birth and death.

According to the Vedic scriptures, the Shankha is one of the most auspicious objects that emerged from the sea during the Ksheera Sagara samudra manthan.Hence it is regarded as the brother of Goddess Lakshmi, the ruler of wealth.

Shankh is one auspicious nine objects - Navanidhi - of Kubera who is the Lord of wealth.
Blowing the Shankha is regarded as an auspicious sound at the start or end of
any ceremony.

The shankh is used in two ways in a puja ritual. One for blowing before the start of ritual and other for actual puja ritual.

The shankh which is used for blowing should not be kept for puja.

Blowing of shankh has special significance in puja ritual.

There are three types of frequencies in the atmosphere namely sattva dominant, raja dominant and tama dominant.

Among them the raja dominant and tama dominant frequencies generate distressing vibrations. The sattva dominant frequencies get attracted to the place of puja ritual but these frequencies are opposed by the raja and tama dominant frequencies so that they do not reach the place of puja and thus the flow of sattva frequencies is hindered.

When the shankh is blown before the start of puja energy is emitted from the shankh. This energy reduces the strength of distressing frequencies. Besides a protective armour of chaitanya (divine consciousness) is formed around the articles of puja.

There is another benefit too. That is when the shankh is blown the activated energy of Lord Vishnu in the universe gets attracted towards the place of worship which is not only beneficial to the person who is blowing the shankh but also to all those who hear it.

Just as the shankh is blown before the start of puja, it is also blown before an arti. The objective behind this being to sustain the deity’s chaitanya attracted to the place of puja ritual and the pure atmosphere generated because of the sattvik frequencies, for a long period.

First of all let us se the importance of shankh. According to our ancient scriptuires that is Puranas, the shankh was originated during the Churning of ocean by the Deities and Lord Vishnu held it in the form of weapon. As per a holy verse which is regularly chanted during the puja ritual it is mentioned that by the command of Lord Vishnu the deities Moon, Sun and Varun are stationed at the base of the shankh, the deity Prajapati on its surface and all the places of pilgrimage like Ganga and Saraswati in its front portion. Yet another speciality of shankh is that the vibrations emanating on blowing it destroys the disease causing germs in the atmosphere. That is the reason it has a important place in Ayurved and medicine.

Blowing of shankh has special significance in puja ritual. It has been mentioned in ‘Varaha Puran’ that one should not open the door of temple without first blowing the shankh. The left sided shankh is blown before the start of puja or performance of arti.

The shankh is used before the puja to sanitize the air around the puja room. This is possible due to certain level of vibrations present in the sound of the shankh. The sound of shankh is of a particular decibel level, which kills all the micro organisms in the air like virus, bacteria etc. The air is assumed to be cleansed before the commencement of puja.

Sanatana Dharma

In Sanatana Dharma established by Adi Sankara, every family leader has to perform daily pooja at his resident everyday. Thus doing so, the sankha pooja is one to be made before performing pooja to the main deities. The process is like this :- Take the conch or Sankha from its place, clean it, pour water in it by uttering Gayatri Mantra, then showing by hands the Shankha Mudra you have to recite
